To kick off our new podcast series, we asked artists from the project "Interconnecting Dance & Ecology" to present their projects based on the question of how they imagine the connection between dance and ecology in 12 years.
A total of 22 individual artists and groups from Berlin were selected by a jury of four from 222 applications. They were invited to present their work on one of the festival Saturdays. These could be experienced on 12th of August 2023 in Park am Gleisdreieck, on 19th of August 2023 in Stadtpark Lichtenberg (as part of Kultursommerfestival Berlin) and on 26th of August 2023 in Volkspark Rehberge.
Guests: Tatiana Mejía, Umi Maisaroh, Jasmin İhraç, Martha Hincapié Charry, Kdindie, Luisa De Santi, Shelley Etkin, Kévin Bonono, Chōri Collective (David Jongsung Myung, Shuntaro Yoshida, Hoa yun Chung, Maharu Maeno), Melissa Figueiredo, Diana Alina Serbanescu, Hea Min Jung, Patrycja Masłowska, Jun Suzuki
In the second episode of the Tanz im August podcast, artistic director Ricardo Carmona talks to Chiara Bersani, who gives exciting insights into her work and current projects. Her work “SOTTOBOSCO“ celebrated its German premiere at HAU2 during the 2023 festival.
In "SOTTOBOSCO" (Italian for "undergrowth") Chiara Bersani takes her audience and the performers into the undergrowth of an imaginary forest. The piece is based on workshops with people with motor disabilities, which she also invited to Berlin in the run-up to the festival. With them, the artist explores how disabled bodies can coexist with nature. She thus continues her intensive artistic exploration of the politics of the body and asks how autonomously created images interact with social narratives – how bodies dance.
In the third episode of the Tanz im August podcast, Ricardo Carmona talks to Radouan Mriziga about his past and current projects. His work “Libya“ celebrated its German premiere at Sophiensaele during Tanz im August 2023.
In “Libya“, the perfomers celebrate the tradition of the North African Amazigh culture as a form of non-imperial history. Sounds of Tarab, Ahwach and Tuareg music from the Maghreb are combined with rap and performance.
In the fourth episode of the Tanz im August podcast, Ricardo Carmona talks to Agata Siniarska about her production "null&void"which celebrated its premiere at HAU3 during Tanz im August 2023.
Agata Sinarska's work approaches the questions of how wars affect the fate of the planet as a whole. She asks: How can human bodies develop transhuman understanding? How can organs be used and refined to enable us to see more, feel more intensely, think differently?
In episode 5 Ricardo Carmona talks to Yasmeen Godder, who is talking about her works "Practicing Empathy #1" and "Practicing Empathy #3". Both works were shown at HAU1 during Tanz im August 2023.
In Practicing Empathy #1, Yasmeen Godder presents how empathy can be practiced in group formations and collective singing. The performers explore different gestures of trust and mutual dependence as they expose the emotional journeys of each of the performers. In her solo performance "Practicing Empathy #3," Godder addresses feelings of exclusion and isolation, asking what enables a deeper connection to the self in order to reconnect.
