10th International Festival Berlin
7.8. – 30.8.1998
“Tanz im August” celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. Originating from the “Berlin Cultural City of Europe” activities in 1988, the festival first took place in 1989. Since then it has continuously developed into what is now the “Internationales Tanzfest Berlin”, Germany's biggest annual dance event. In this tenth year, a long cherished dream will be fulfilled – all three opera houses will be festival venues, allowing us to expand our programming and reach an even wider audience.
In 1988, a performance by the Nederlands Dans Theater in Berlin raised the question why our city could not be home to such an outstanding company? This August, the three ensembles of NDT will each perform in one of Berlin's three opera houses. These performances are made possible through the support of the Hauptstadt Kulturfonds.
Alongside this widely acclaimed company, our programme also offers a wide range of contemporary ground breaking artists and companies as well as newcomers from the younger independent scene.
A total of 19 productions at nine venues will offer ample opportunity to discover and experience current dance works.
