“Cage Shuffle” is a particular homage to the influential composer, author and philosopher John Cage: while Paul Lazar tells a series of Cage’s one-minute stories, he simultaneously follows a complex choreographic score by Annie-B Parson, the artistic director of Big Dance Theater. The sequence of the stories is determined by chance; they have no connection to the choreography. And yet in this new work, which combines conceptual stringency with pure pleasure, unexpected relationships between text and movement continually emerge.
