Three people on stage in a row. The person in the middle is torn between the back and forth. The words "zu ihr oder zu ihr" ("to her or to her") are projected in the background.
Photography of a stage situation. Two musicians accompany the scene on a double bass and percussion. One person sits on the floor with a cushion, the other person looks over at her. Some cuboids are spread out on the stage floor.
In the foreground a person is playing a small drum with a mallet. In the background a person rests on the floor with a cushion.
A person twirls a flag in a flared square. This person is wearing replicas of a cowboy costume. To the left and right of her are two other people watching and commenting on the performance.
A person lies sideways in the square on display, a circle is drawn around them with chalk. A person approaches her with arms raised. In the background, another person sits on a cuboid and observes the scene.

Rimini Protokoll (Helgard Haug) & Theater HORA

Der kaukasische Kreidekreis

After Bertolt Brecht
Music by Barbara Morgenstern

Duration approx. 120 mins.

Language German  With English surtitles  Swiss German

“All right, I’ll do the test once more, to make certain”, says Azdak the judge, before he asks the child to step once more into the chalk circle and calls again on the two mothers to prove which of them is the real one. It is the most familiar scene in the play: a legend, a “very old one”. The outcome of the test is also well known, with the child going to the more “motherly” woman rather than its biological mother. But what if the child is given the choice? Which one should the child choose? And is that it? Can this “old legend” be told by performers who will probably never have children and rely on others for their care? The artists of Theater HORA bring their own rules with them. New rules have to be invented together. Think about how a fresh start is an opportunity. Notice how everything changes when one’s gaze settles on it. See how words fall on fertile ground. Are there more than two options? Who else is there to choose from? “All right, I’ll do the test once more.”
