18.8. Audio description
Duration 70
Spurred on by her childhood memories of growing up in Johannesburg during apartheid, South-African choreographer Robyn Orlin seeks to disentangle the practice of the Zulu rickshaw drivers from its colonial enmeshments. Donning their traditional, multicoloured costumes, eight young South African dancers re-enact the façade that obscures their deplorable living conditions. “We wear our wheels with pride and slap your streets with color… we said ‘bonjour’ to satan in 1820…” pays tribute to the rickshaw drivers’ beauty and inventiveness, while simultaneously revealing their underlying struggle of resistance and their refusal to compromise their dignity.
