Workshops

Once again this year there will be workshops by artists involved in the festival. They will provide an insight into the artistic working methods and movement practices that shape parts of the programme. We are happy to continue our collaboration with Tanzfabrik Berlin and to give you the opportunity to experience the programme physically. The workshops are open to all skill levels and can be booked directly on the homepage of Tanzfabrik Berlin.

Pantsula, South African dance styles & music Workshop in the run up to “DUB”

The vibrant dance production “DUB” by Amala Dianor celebrates the exuberant creativity of urban dance, a dynamic conglomerate of art forms that have developed on the streets, in subcultures, and on the internet. Two of the dancers, Kgotsofalang Joseph Mavundla and Sangram Mukhopadhyay, will share their unique artistic dance practices with us in two different workshops.

Pantsula dance emerged in South Africa in the 1950s and 1960s as a response to the forced removals implemented by the apartheid government and began as informal street dance competitions. Pantsula was used as an expression of resistance during the political struggle then occurring against the apartheid government, as well as being used to spread awareness about social issues. After the end of apartheid in 1994, pantsula has become a symbol of South African youth culture and a way for young people to express their identity and creativity.

Kgotsofalang started his professional career as dancer later a choreographer and teacher at Ezomdabu Youth Entertainers for more than a decade with the company touring with it. He later joined Moving into Dance Mophatong for a period of 3 years where he graduated in performing arts and trained to special in working with people living with disability. Kgotsofalang specialises with vibrant Isipantsula rhythmic footwork movement and contemporary movements.

The workshop will take place on 24th of August 2024 from 11 AM to 1:30 PM in the Tanzfabrik (Studio 1) and will be heldin English.

Participation in the workshop is open to all levels and costs 50 euros.

Waacking and Indian dance styles & music Workshop in the run up to “DUB”

The vibrant dance production “DUB” by Amala Dianor celebrates the exuberant creativity of urban dance, a dynamic conglomerate of art forms that have developed on the streets, in subcultures, and on the internet. Two of the dancers, Kgotsofalang Joseph Mavundla and Sangram Mukhopadhyay, will share their unique artistic dance practices with us in two different workshops.

Waacking, a 70s Los Angeles Gay club dance style, comes closest to describe Sangram’s form and articulation of the body. Sangram Mukhopadhyay shall be offering a workshop investigating the gestural genealogy of arm movement combining hastas (arm gestures rooted in Indian neo-classical dance forms) and hand performance (circular motion of the upper limbs annotated in Waacking amongst other club styled cultures).

With a clubbing background, Sangram Mukhopadhyay is an Indian dancer based in Calcutta. Involved in the Queer community, Sangram takes part in numerous projects. Curious and emancipated, this dancer offers audiences a generous and original dance, blurring gender boundaries and fusing traditional Indian dances with voguing, electro or waacking. With him, you can embark on another world where benevolent creatures draw you into a shared, joyful dance.

The workshop will take place on 25th of August 2024 from 11 AM to 1:30 PM in the Tanzfabrik (Studio 1) and will be held  in English.

Participation in the workshop is open to all levels and costs 50 euros.

Ready to climb together? Movement Workshop in the run up to “MONT VENTOUX”

Inspired by the text of the poet Francesco Petrarca, the dance collective embarks with “MONT VENTOUX” on a search for a new image of humanity that is up to the challenges of our time. In a workshop, Angela Demattè, one of the dancers in the performance, invites us to climb our own mountains with movement and imagination. You will have the opportunity to explore new heights, sensations and ways in approaching the undertaking. Through guided exercises and improvisations, will explore together the depths of body memory and challenge our physical limits, opening the door to new forms of expression. No matter how big your mountain is, we are here to guide you to the top. Ready to climb together?

Outbox me Workshop in the run up to "Outbox Me Battle x Tanz im August"

Although breaking (b-boying) is the original source of dance for Saïdo Lehlouh, the choreographer and co-director of the CCN de Rennes et de Bretagne (France) has quickly expanded his terrain over the course of his career and incorporated many dancers' forms of movement into his creations. These different influences interweave in his projects – whether in solos, duets or group works – always paying great attention to the diversity of life paths and their interaction in the group.

As part of "Outbox Me Battle x Tanz im August", Saïdo Lehlou invites you to explore the many possibilities of improvisation, drawing on the dynamics of deep listening and the impulses of encounters.

The workshop will take place on 31st August 2024 from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM at Tempelhofer Feld and is open to everyone. The stage will be right next to the TEMPEL GARTEN. The workshop is free of charge and will be held in English

All detailed information and the required registration will be published shortly.

Skate-Workshop in the run up to “Skatepark”

Legend has it that skateboarding was born on a day when low waves forced surfers in Los Angeles to take to the asphalt. Skating grew into a remarkable choreography in public space, which is now firmly anchored in urban culture, Berlin included.

In “Skatepark, choreographer Mette Ingvartsen explores the speed and energy of movement on wheels – a physical memory from her own childhood. She works with a permanent group of skaters and dancers and makes room for local skaters. During the workshop the participants discover the power of the local community. Some of them will be working together on the opening scene of the performance that will be performed during Tanz im August on 17th and 18th of August 2024 at Haus der Berliner Festspiele in Berlin.

The workshop will take place on 16th of June 2024 from 10 AM to 1PM in the Skatehalle Berlin and will be held mainly in English. It is aimed at 8 to 30 year olds. A good basic knowledge of skating is required. Up to 8 workshop participants can then become part of the performance.

The workshop is free of charge. A lump sum expense allowance will be paid for participation in the rehearsals and performances.

The registration deadline is 5th of June 2024.
