In her acclaimed autobiographical debut solo “Hatched” in 2007, Mamela Nyamza reflected on her life as a mother, lesbian and artist. Together with ten ballet dancers, one singer and a musician, she is now pushing her confrontation of identity and belonging, gender binarism, tradition and artistic expression further in “Hatched Ensemble”. The poetic, emotionally haunting work is characterised by strong colour symbolism and unapologetical demystification. It juxtaposes diverse musical movement material from classical Western dance history with African dance styles and vocal scores. Thereby the choreographer and activist invites the audience to break down attributions and reflect on their own affiliations, however painful, confusing and tiring they may be.
