Twenty years after the end of the war in Yugoslavia the name Aleksandra Zec still causes heated discussions. In 1991, the twelve-year-old girl from a Serbian family in Croatia had to watch as her father was murdered. Following this, she and her mother were abducted by a five-man Croatian militia and shot. The murderers have never been brought to court.
Oliver Frljić is director of the Croatian National Theatre “Ivan Zajc” in Rijeka and one of country’s most important theatre makers today. The piece “Aleksandra Zec” uses powerful images to create a poetic lamentation for the dead. Frljić conjures up a portrait of a family that is as moving as it is absurd: As six actors sit at a table playing the family that is doing their everyday chores, it feels like they already know about their impending murder.
